Unions balk at Johnson's strong-mayor plan
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is trying to convince labor leaders to endorse a ballot proposal that would allow him to submit the budget, appoint officials and veto some City Council decisions. The Mayor and labor leaders met last week for the Mayor to pitch his plan to the unions. The group voted to oppose the ballot measure, excepting the firefighters union. A union leader said that they would not vote for the proposal without seeing the final version of the plan; only a draft of the plan has been released. The Mayor needs the support of four members to put the measure on the ballot. A spokesman for the Mayor said that it would have been nice to have union support, but that they expected the City Council to vote to put the measure on the ballot. A union official said that they were open to reconsidering once they saw a concrete proposal. The City Council is due to discuss the measure next week.
