Unions could get a boost from California's cap-and-trade spending proposal
A last minute proposal was made to tie labor standards into California’s cap-and-trade program that requires corporations to buy permits in order to release greenhouse gas emissions, which will fund a $1.5 Billion plan for spending revenue. The budget includes $140 Million for rebates. If approved, the proposal would require state-appointed regulators to verify the car companies’ fair treatment of their workers for them to be eligible for rebates under cap-and-trade. The proposal was made while Nissan and Tesla are in the middle of heated labor disputes and if approved, would give auto unions greater leverage against car makers.
