Unions gain access to thousands of Google workers after UK employment rights overhaul
Under new British employment legislation, Google has reached an agreement allowing the Prospect union to communicate directly with approximately 7,000 employees across its UK operations, including YouTube. The arrangement permits union representatives to hold workplace meetings and recruit members, following a similar agreement involving Meta employees. Although the agreement does not formally recognize Prospect as the workers' bargaining representative, it provides greater opportunities for organizing around wages, workplace flexibility, artificial intelligence, and employment conditions. The development marks a significant expansion of union access within the technology industry and demonstrates how changes in labor law can reshape organizing opportunities.
