Unions Lose Election Bid
On Thursday, a judge blocked the the New York State United Teachers bid for a temporary restraining order against a law that would have allowed the union to spend much more money in state elections. NYSUT said that the limitations that were placed on their PAC's spending ability violated their first amendment rights. Federal courts have been rolling back similar laws due to the Supreme Court Citizens United decision. NYSUT's attorneys said that they were not sure whether they would appeal the ruling or not, but it would be unlikely to affect this election cycle if they did. The Board of Elections said that the decision was a good one, and that it would have been unfair to change the rules so late in the season.
