Unions: Portugal Strike Halts Factories, Transport
Portuguese unions representing around 650,000 workers began a one-day strike against austerity measures at midnight. Unions say that all subway workers and city hall employees have struck, while the government said that 45% of health care workers had left their posts, but the strike was not widespread in other sectors of the economy. The unions say that the austerity measures will harm workers, but does not cost bankers and the rich enough. the government is attempting to reduce a 9.3% budget deficit to 7.3% this year, and below 3% by 2013.
