Unions representing Chicago Transit Authority employees demand greater worker safety protections after multiple murders occurred on CTA’s Blue Line
Two Chicago unions representing Chicago Transit Authority workers have called for new security measures after four passengers riding the Blue Line were murdered on Labor Day. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 241 represent 2600 transit employees and the unions state that the current security policies do not protect worker safety. The unions are seeking the return of a police force focused on CTA. Currently, less than two hundred police officers are assigned to CTA security, as well as four hundred unarmed security guards. The unions state that unarmed security guards have limited authority and cannot arrest individuals. In addition, the CTA security footage is not live and is only used for review after an event has occurred.
