Unions shift attention to small shops
As union membership has declined, some unions are looking to organize workers employed at smaller businesses, including car washes and warehouses. Many of these workers are low-paid and often temporary. Unions work with other groups to help educate workers about their rights on the job and how to improve working conditions. Workers at car washes have had some success in organizing and negotiating contracts that protect workers and improve their pay. Critics say that unionization will make it harder for small businesses to compete, but advocates say that many workers are exploited and mistreated by businesses.
