United gains a labor reprieve
United Airlines won a small labor victory when a bankruptcy judge imposed a temporary 10 percent pay cut for workers in the mechanics union. The mechanics union rejected an earlier contract proposal from United which would have cut their pay by 5 percent. The airline's pilots and flight attendants have also agreed to new contracts that cut pay and changed work rules.
