United loses $542 million, plans to cut 1,100 jobs
United Airlines will cut over 1,000 jobs by year's end in the face of a $542 million loss in the first quarter that the airline's parent company blamed on soaring fuel costs. The loss was the company's largest since its bankruptcy restructuring ended two years ago.
