United States' largest privately held company, Cargill, plans to cut eight thousand employees
Cargill, a food production company, has announced layoffs that will affect thousands of workers worldwide. The company is the United States’ biggest privately held company, as well as the largest trader of agricultural commodities in the world. Cargill sells and distributes ingredients and is in the middle of the supply chain between farmers and producers and food manufacturers and consumer companies. The layoffs will reduce the company’s workforce by five percent, and this is largely due to decreasing food commodity prices. It is estimated that Cargill employs 160,000 workers, which means that the cuts will affect 8,000 workers. Cargill announced earlier this year that it would be opening a new hub in Atlanta, and this hub would employ around four hundred employees working in technology and engineering positions.
