University of Michigan Medicine employees authorize one-day strike action in union vote
Unionized workers at the University of Michigan Medicine voted in favor of one-day strike authorization. U Of M Medicine workers are represented by the Service Employees International Union, and the union represents clerical staff workers, respiratory therapists, patient care technicians, and phlebotomists. Workers unionized in two stages, with the first group of workers successfully unionized in July 2023, and the second group of workers gained union representation in March 2024. The worker demands are under three main values: Respect, Parity, and Equity. Workers are seeking a $20/hour minimum wage, fair wage increases, and the retention of all employees who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. The union is also demanding that all workers pay the same percent of their income on healthcare, parking, and other employee benefits.
