University of Wisconsin ends Nike deal
The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced over the weekend that it will be ending its business contract with Nike over rights for Honduran workers. Nike came under scrutiny from several universities, including the University of Washington, and now Cornell, after it closed two Honduran plants in January 2009. Both of these plants produced apparel and goods emblazoned with the Wisconsin logo. Reportedly, the workers at both locations were let go suddenly and have yet to receive almost $2 million in severance pay. Although the plants are technically owned by subordinates of Nike, Wisconsin felt that it should not condone labor oversight in the parent company. Chancellor Biddy Martin (formerly of Cornell) said, "Nike has not developed, and does not intend to develop, meaningful ways of addressing the plight of displaced workers and their families in Honduras."
