UPDATE 2 ? VW labour chief backs UAW union bid for US works council
The top labor leader for Volkswagen reiterated his support for a German-style works council at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. The workers at the plan are not currently represented by a union, however the UAW has been working with the employees on organizing. A counter-organization effort is also underway and has over a third of the necessary 1,567 signatures from hourly employees needed to show that a majority of the plant?s workers oppose the union. VW executives are hopeful that their consideration of the Chattanooga plant for the manufacture of a new vehicle, which promises new jobs, and their vocal support of the UAW and a works council will increase the chances of organizing where so many southern manufacturing plants have not.
