US longshoremen reach tentative deal with ports and shippers to avert strike
A tentative 6-year agreement has been reached between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the US Alliance of ports and shipping companies, a week before the January 15th deadline. While no details of the agreement are being released in order to give union members a chance to read and approve the documents, a joint statement was issued stating the agreement protected union jobs while allowing modernization to take place. After staging a 3-day strike in October, the union agreed to a 62% pay increase over 6 years but it was contingent on an agreement being reached before January 15 over the issue of automation, especially the concern that semi-automated cranes would replace workers. President-elect Trump met with the union president Harold Daggett at Mar-a-Lago after which he came out in support of the union.
