USW: Jail nun/nurse was fired for union organizing
The United Steelworkers say that Sister Barbara, who works at the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh as a nurse, was fired for union organizing. The removal of the nun?s security clearance at the jail happened just two weeks before the union certification election. Sister Barbara worked for a for-profit healthcare contractor, Corizon, based out of Tennessee that had won the contract to service the Allegheny County jail last year. Since beginning operations in the jail, Corizon has had issues with adequately supplying the prison and poor working conditions. USW members, jail employees, and others protested in Pittsburgh on Monday to bring further light to the potential unfair labor practices in their dealings with Corizon.
