UTS ordered by SafeWork NSW to pause job cuts due to risk of ‘psychological harm’
The workplace safety regulator for New South Wales, Australia, has ordered the University of Technology Sydney to pause hundreds of planned job cuts, saying the process could cause “serious and imminent” psychological harm to employees. The ruling halts meetings with about 800 staff and delays the release of a proposal that would cut 400 positions. Union leaders called it a rare rebuke of university management, arguing that staff concerns have been ignored. UTS maintains the cuts are necessary to address ongoing budget deficits but cannot proceed until safety issues are resolved.
