Valero Texas City refinery rejects union
After a vote Friday, employees at Valero Energy Corp.'s Texas City refinery remain non-unionized. 93 voted in favor of joining with the United Steelworkers (USW), but 183 chose to reject the union. Steelworkers' Subdistrict Director Jim Lefton says the rejection points to the difficulties in unionizing under current law - "This a prime example of how the laws are clearly in favor of the corporations when it comes to organizing." The company, on the other hands, lauds the decision of employees, saying that they are happy the Texas City workers recognized that Valero has good relations with its employees whether or not they are unionized - "We appreciate the support and commitment shown by the Texas City team."
