Various California unions have taken a stance against autonomous car services
Waymo, a California self-driving car company recently applied to increase autonomous car services in the state, and various unions have expressed opposition. Way is seeking to introduce services to the Los Angeles area as well as the suburbs of San Francisco. Labor unions claim that autonomous cars could eliminate driving jobs in the future, and put numerous workers in the state at risk. The major union leading the charge is the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, the California Professional Firefighters, and the California Labor Federation have joined Teamsters in standing against autonomous vehicle services. The unions are seeking the requirement of backup human drivers to increase the safety of these services. A current bill in the California state legislature proposed that cities and counties in California will have the ability to pass laws regulating autonomous car services.
