Various Jersey Mike’s Sub stores in Virginia violated Fair Labor Standards Act, responsible for numerous child labor violations
Several submarine sandwich shop locations in Loudon County in Virginia have been found in violation of child labor laws. The chain of Jersey Mike’s Sub restaurants are all owned by one operator, and the operator will be fined over $100,000 due to the violations. The United States Department of Labor discovered that the Jersey Mike’s Sub stores were employing child workers to do dangerous tasks, such as using power-driven meat slicers. The operation of dangerous machinery by minor-aged employees violates the Fair Labor Standards Act, and locations were also found in violation of the act due to the length of shifts worked. The investigation found that minor-aged employees worked shifts longer than eight hours on non-school days, and worked shifts longer than three hours on school days. The United States Department of Labor also found that certain locations did not correctly pay workers overtime, and the operator is required to pay over $800 in back wages.
