Vice Media announces plans to shut down Vice website and layoff hundreds of workers
The chief of Vice Media recently announced layoffs that will affect hundreds of employees. The announcement also stated that the company will also no longer publish media on Vice.com, and will shift to a studio business model. One of Vice’s other media brands, Refinery 29, will continue to publish online content and will function as a standalone digital media publishing company. Last year, Vice was at risk of bankruptcy and was bought by Fortress Investment Group. Various divisions within Vice were cut and numerous employees were cut when the company was bought. Widespread layoffs are occurring in the media and news industry, including at Vox Media, Condé Nast, and NowThis.
