Virgin Australia workers apply to hold strike authorization ballot
Airport ground workers and inflight cabin crew who work for Virgin Australia are applying to the Fair Work Commission to hold a protected action vote regarding strike authorization. Unionized Virgin Australia workers, represented by the Transport Workers Union, announced earlier this month the intent to strike, due to low pay and poor working conditions. Workers have stated they receive rock bottom pay, deal with job insecurity, work in unsafe environments, and experience poor work-life balance. These conditions have led to high rates of employee turnover, and have led many workers to take on second and third jobs to make ends meet. Virgin Australia stated that it is working with the Transport Workers Union towards reaching a new collective agreement, and will continue to bargain in good faith. If an agreement is not reached and strike action occurs, travelers will experience various disruptions and cancellations to Virgin Australia flights and services.
