Visual effects workers seek to unionize to improve working conditions
Visual effects (VFX) workers have recently reported being overworked and underpaid amidst the current surge in streaming services producing entertainment content. They have expressed frustration being the only non-unionized major department on film sets and feeling exploited working extremely long hours doing challenging technical work for minimum wage. Some VFX workers have compared the conditions to being in the military because of the high standards, stress, and firings at a moment's notice. As a result, VFX workers are seeking to join other entertainment workers in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union.
