Wal-Mart, Sears Refuse Compensation for Factory Victims
Wal-Mart and Sears are continuing to refuse to help compensate victims of a Bangladeshi factory fire that killed more than 100 workers last year. Apparel for both companies was being produced in the factory at the time of the fire, but the companies say that their suppliers were not approved to use the factory. They also say that since they did not directly employ the workers in the factory, they are not responsible for any issues there. The companies say that they have instituted better safety programs. Advocates and workers say that is not enough, and the companies need to take responsibility for how their products are produced.
