Wal-Mart Seeks Union Support for City Stores
As part of its plan to build stores in New York City, Wal-Mart is in talks with the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York. While no deal has been reached, Wal-Mart says that they have common interests with the Council, and will continue to talk. Other unions, including those who represent retail workers are not pleased with the discussions, since Wal-Mart would not have to use union labor to staff the stores even if it used union labor to build the stores. An anti-Wal-Mart group, Wal-Mart Free NYC will announce its member s in the next few weeks, and is expected to include other unions. Wal-Mart's push to build stores in New York City will be the subject of a City Council meeting in January.
