‘We give them second chances’: the frontline workers guiding riders through LA’s transit system
In Los Angeles, a pilot program launched by the Metro in September 2022 has been a significant success, involving almost 350 ambassadors who provide support and safety across the city's transit system. These ambassadors, recognizable by their bright lime green jackets, have had over a million interactions with riders and saved more than 250 lives, dealing with issues from drug overdoses to mental health crises. The program was initiated during a time when public transit was facing multiple challenges, including reduced ridership due to the pandemic, a rise in violent crimes, and increased homelessness. The ambassadors, equipped with Narcan and trained in mental health and de-escalation tactics, not only enhance safety but also collect crucial data to improve system operations. Metro plans to make this program permanent, reflecting its effectiveness in improving public safety and potentially increasing transit ridership in a city traditionally reliant on cars.
