Wisconsin Bill Advances, Then Stalls
While the Wisconsin State Assembly approved a bill on Friday that would severely limit collective bargaining, the Senate was unable to pass the bill. The Senate needs a quorum to vote, and with Senate Democrats still in Illinois, the Senate is unable to act. The Senate majority leader said that the Democrats needed to return and go back to work. Protesters continue to occupy the Capital around the clock, trying to stop the bill from becoming law. Indiana Democrats have also left their state for Illinois, blocking a bill similar to Wisconsin's. Ohio senators began accepting amendments to their anti-union bill, saying that they plan to work through the weekend, in hopes of voting by Tuesday. Oklahoma and Tennessee are the latest states to consider legislation that would limit the power of unions.
