WNBA players’ union given choice to opt out of current collective bargaining agreement early
The collective bargaining agreement between Women’s National Basketball Association and the league’s player union is set to end in 2027, but the union has been given the opportunity to opt out of the contract if they choose to. The popularity and viewership of WNBA games has skyrocketed in the last season, and the WNBA has signed new media contracts with NBC, Amazon Prime, and Disney. The players’ union has until November 1st to decide whether or not to opt out of the current agreement, and the union will likely choose to opt out as players have various demands, including wage increases, better child care benefits, family planning services, and pensions. If the players’ union decides in favor of opting out, the collective bargaining agreement will apply for the next year, giving the two parties a year to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.
