Women gain ground in jobs race
Statistics released by the Labor Department Friday said that half of the 175,000 jobs added to the economy in May went to women. Additionally, the unemployment rate for women 16 and over fell from 7.3% to 7.1% while the rate for men in the same demographic increased slightly. The numbers for May follow a larger trend seen in 2013, in which women have gained 471,000 jobs although they make up just 47% of the workforce. Gains made by women in the job market this year are explained by their large presence in industries such as healthcare, temporary workers, restaurants, and retail which have led the economic recovery.
