Workers at a General Motors assembly plant will be temporarily laid off as plant shifts production to Chevrolet Bolt EV
General Motors announced late last week that workers at a Kansas assembly plant will be affected by temporary layoffs in the coming months. The temporary layoffs will be conducted in rounds, and the first round of cuts will occur in mid-November, and 680 employees will be let go. General Motors will no longer produce the Chevrolet Malibu sedan at the assembly plant. The assembly plant will shift to the production of the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle, and additional tooling needs to be put into the factory due to the change. During this time period, workers will be temporarily laid off but will receive compensation and benefits according to the union contract between General Motors and the United Auto Workers union. Production of the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle at the assembly plant is expected to begin in 2025 after the retooling of the factory is complete.
