Workers at South Carolina nuclear rod assembly plant seek unionization
Employees at a nuclear rod factory in South Carolina are seeking to unionize, and a union election will be held at the beginning of March. The factory is the largest assembly plant for nuclear rods in the United States, and nuclear rods are used in nuclear reactors to produce energy. Workers are seeking union representation from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union, and over fifty percent of workers have signed union cards. Unionization In the nuclear energy industry is common, and around one-third of workers in this sector are represented by unions. The other parts of the supply chain are all unionized, such as the factory that produces nuclear rod parts, and the nuclear reactor plant that produces energy. The demand for nuclear energy is increasing, as the United States and other countries are working to be less dependent on fossil fuels for energy.
