Workers Reject South Africa Gold Mines' Pay Plan, Union Says
South African miners have rejected an offer from the country's largest gold mining companies to raise wages and end their strike. The union that officially represents the workers says that the workers did not accept the deal, which would have raised wages by 2% over a previous agreement, and would have paid the lowest-paid workers more. Over 40% of the gold output has been halted by the strikes, which are illegal according to South African law. Some mines have fired workers who have struck, but it is not clear if the firings have led to work resuming.
