Workers strike at swanky Toronto hotel as TIFF ramps up
Workers at the Toronto Royal York Hotel are protesting against the hotel today. The strike began at 6 a.m. on Friday and will last 24 hours. Workers say that the strike is over seniority, jobs descriptions and benefits. The workers' contract expired in July and discussions have been ongoing since august, but workers say they are no closer to a resolution. Many of the guests at the hotel this week are attending the Toronto International Film Festival, including actors like Martin Sheen, who joined the picket line on Friday. The union says they are only protesting, not asking guests to boycott the hotel, saying that they do not want to interrupt the film festival.
