Working Without Pay A Reality For Much Of Greece?s Labor Force
As the dampened economy in Greece rolls on and the official unemployment rate stays stubbornly around 28%, those still employed face other problems. About one-fifth of those still working in Greece are doing so for no pay. Some have not received a check from their employer since mid-2012, and continue to show up to their jobs based solely on promises from their employers of retroactive pay or severance pay when the company can afford it in the future. If the workers quit, they could lose the promise of pay with even less of a hope to find new work. Many extended families are banding together, but at the same time as younger family members are no longer getting paid or losing their jobs, older members are having their pensions reduced monthly in the name of austerity.
