Workplace chair's claims called 'outrageous'
Part-time chair Steve Mahoney of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in Ontario, Canada, has come under fire recently for some of his expenses, which are generally directly funded by the taxpayers. Mahoney is paid a salary of $140,000 for his part time position, charged $13,000 for a three-day trip to Australia, and bought a $250 GPS unit for his vehicle in South Carolina. Mahoney explained that all these expenses were reasonable (he often works seven days a week, he had to meet with a number of officials in Australia, and he got lost getting to a meeting in South Carolina), but some remain unhappy with his charges. The WSIB ruled that Mahoney did remain within the bounds of policy, but implemented a new rule in response, saying that employees would have to repay taxpayers for all 'unreasonable' charges in the future.
