World economy may lose 51 million jobs
Estimates from the United Nations indicate that up to 51 million jobs could be lost worldwide in 2009 as a result of the recession. The International Labor Organization predicted a bleak outlook too, claiming at very best the number of jobless persons will increase by 18 million from 2007, and the unemployment rate will reach 6.1% globally. The organization added that this rate is likely to be much higher in reality, with the number of unemployed rising by 30 million and the jobless rate reaching at least 6.5%. Experts also expect those who hold on to their jobs to see wages, benefits, and work conditions worsen as economic conditions worsen. The ILO said developing countries will likely suffer the most.
