Years after the BP oil spill, cleanup workers experiencing negative health impacts and illness sue the company
In 2010, thousands of lower-income workers were employed to clean up the massive BP oil spill, and now many of these workers have experienced negative health effects, including chronic respiratory issues, rashes, and cancer. As a result, some of these workers have active lawsuits against the gas and oil company, claiming that BP made them sick. At the time of the clean up, BP told the workers they did not need breathing protection while working because the toxins had evaporated, and against the advice of the federal government, the company did not collect biological evidence to measure potential toxins in the workers' bloodstreams. Due to an earlier settlement though, there cannot be a class-action lawsuit against BP for these worker safety claims so workers are suing the company individually.
