Zimbabwe Labor Body Calls for Strike to Demand Unity Government
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has called for a general strike beginning November 11 in response to the failure of government factions to form a coalition government. The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front party and two divisions of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have failed to end disputes between MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, even after signing an agreement to do so on September 15th. Previous strike calls have failed since workers cannot risk losing wages and often fear the police; but given the economic turmoil facing the country today, a strike in desperation for a transitional government may be successful this time.
