Union to DPS: Hear our plan
The Detroit Association of Educational Office Employees has published a set of reports and proposals that they say will help the Detroit School Districts to navigate this difficult time in their history. The report is titled 'A Stronger Detroit For Our Kids' and suggests that the proposals inside could add $130 million dollars to the budget over the next five years. Union president Ruby Newbold criticized proposals for privatization which she said would cost the districts talented people without really improving the situation. The union report, instead, calls for a decrease in absenteeism, centralized record-keeping, waste and supply reductions, and union-management cooperation. The proposals were submitted to emergency financial manager Robert Bobb Tuesday. Bobb says he is reviewing the proposals and is in favor of a union-management financial committee of some sort.
