IU graduate workers extend their strike
Graduate workers at Indiana University have been on strike since April 13th and just voted to extend their strike into finals week. On Tuesday, 867 graduate students voted to extend the strike through May 3rd with a 95.7% majority. These workers want union recognition, higher wages, fee reductions, and a discussion on benefits. In response to the strike, Provost Shrivastava reinstated the Student Academic Appointee Committee, announced a task force focused on creating the “ideal graduate experience,” committed to a 5% stipend increase for all SAAs, and a minimum stipend rate of $18,000 campuswide. None of these actions have been supported by the Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition. Faculty members have held a town hall sharing concerns about the provost’s response and have written a petition garnering over 50 signatures.
