Dartmouth men’s basketball players are seeking to unionize
Men’s basketball players at Dartmouth College have filed a union petition to the National Labor Relations Board. All fifteen players signed the petition, and they are seeking to be represented by the Service Employees International Union. Dartmouth administration has stated that it is considering what course of action to take, and that the college has respect for Dartmouth students and labor unions. Student- athletes in the NCAA are increasingly challenging the previous standards regarding compensation for athletes, such as brand endorsements and athletic scholarships. In the past, the NCAA was strongly against unionization and athlete compensation to preserve amateur status in college sports. The current environment in college sports is more receptive to the demands of student-athletes, but the Dartmouth men’s basketball team will still face various challenges in the process of unionizing.
