A Cross-Border Battle of Auto Unions Heats Up
Competition between American states and Canadian provinces for automotive jobs is creating tension between the unions that represent workers on each side. The newest battle involves an incentive package offered by the Ontario government to companies that invest at least 300 million Canadian dollars in a new project in Ontario, or create or protect more than 300 jobs. As the big three automakers have been forced to combine some assembly lines there has been rising competition between the American UAW (United Automobile Workers) and the Canadian Auto Workers for plants and jobs.
