Car giant 'abused human rights'
DaimlerChrysler is being sued by a group of Argentine plaintiffs who claim the company used the volatile political situation in Argentina as an excuse to act against organized labor and that managers at the Buenos Aires Mercedes-Benz plant aided in the kidnapping, torture, and murder of union members. An outside investigation, commissioned by DaimlerChrysler, found no evidence of any human rights abuses by the company. The lawsuit has been issued under the Alien Tort Claims Act, an obscure and complex law that has been interpreted as allowing access to US courts for victims of human rights abuses.
