Colorado Workers Rights United Coalition holds rally at State House, demand change to current state labor laws
The Colorado Workers Rights United Coalition gathered at the Colorado State House earlier last week to rally in support of the Worker Protection Act. Various state lawmakers are looking to introduce the Worker Protection Act to the state legislature in January, and the Act would expand workers' rights to unionization. The process of gaining union representation in Colorado requires two elections. The first election is for employees to vote on forming a union, and a union is formed if fifty percent or more of workers vote in favor. The second election is regarding union security, and employees will vote on an all-union agreement. Unionized workers need to win the second election to be able to collect dues from every worker who would benefit from union negotiations, and in order to win this election seventy-five percent or more of employees need to vote in favor. Colorado is the only state to have labor laws that require a second election, and the Worker Protection Act would remove this requirement.
