Journalists at The Guardian authorize strike action due to management’s plans to sell The Observer
The Guardian writers voted in favor of strike authorization after the newspaper announced that it plans to sell The Observer, The Guardian’s sister newspaper. The journalists are represented by the National Union of Journalists, and the journalists passed the strike authorization vote, as well as a vote of no confidence in leadership. If the writers want to take strike action, the National Union of Journalists must inform The Guardian at least two weeks in advance. The Guardian and The Observer are a part of the Guardian Media Group, and management is planning to sell The Observer to Tortoise Media. Tortoise Media is a media startup company created by the former boss of BBC News. The union stated that it would not pursue strike action if discussions between Guardian Media Group and Tortoise Media were abandoned.
