A jump in gross domestic product and increased business spending offer evidence that the economy is growing stronger. Even manufacturing, one of the hardest-hit sectors, seems to be improving. Claims for unemployment benefits are falling according to the Labor Department, however many companies remain reluctant to increase hiring.
