Emanuel’s Plan to Charge for Trash Removal Spotlights Chicago’s Class Divide
Due to Chicago's junk credit rating, the city faces a $745 million budget shortfall. The mayor, Rahm Emanuel, has announced that most residents in the city will now have to pay $9.50 a month for trash removal. In addition, the mayor plans to increase property taxes to generate an additional $543 million. Privatization of trash removal could cut costs considerably, however privatization is unlikely because of opposition from labor unions.
