Infosys Settles Sexual Harassment Case
India's second-largest software exporter---formerly the largest---announced on Sunday that it has reached a $3 million out of court settlement in a sexual harassment case brought by a former American employee against the company and one of its executives (see WIT for Sep. 6, 2003). The plaintiff's suit alleged that Infosys Technologies' former global head of sales and marketing---the company's highest paid executive and a board member---had visually and verbally harassed her, and that Infosys failed to prevent the harassment or her termination. The case came as an eye-opener to many Indian companies, revealing the degree to which their close ties with US markets expose them to harassment cases that their personnel policies do not adequately prevent or provide legal defenses against.
