Labor groups say Amazon has underreported COVID-19 cases
A coalition of four unions have sent a complaint to the Assistant Secretary of Labor urging for OSHA to investigate their claim that the company is grossly misrepresenting their COVID-19 cases in its warehouses. The coalition is made up of the Teamsters, the Service Employees Union, the Communication Workers of America, and the United Farm Workers of America. They say that in 2020 Amazon had at least 20,000 employees’ contract COVID-19 but only reported that 27 of the cases were contracted while employees were at work. Amazon did not challenge these numbers but did say “A positive test does not mean someone became infected as a result of their employment with Amazon — these individuals can be exposed in many ways outside of work.”
