PepsiCo Unions Seek NLRB Help to Fight $50 Tax on Fat, Smoking
Three locals of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, representing around 300 workers at PepsiCo in upstate New York have asked the National Labor Relations Board to intervene in a dispute over a health tax implemented by the company. The company's health care policy charges employees $50 a month if they smoke or have medical issues that cause weight gain. The unions say that the tax is hurting their ability to look for a health plan, and that it is not right to punish workers for illnesses. Pepsi says that workers can join programs that help them quit smoking or lose weight and therefore avoid the tax.
