Strike by West Bank Teachers Gains Momentum, Challenging Government
Since February 7th, many schools in the West Bank have been closed as a result of a teachers' strike. These teachers are demanding that the Palestinian government grant them a wage increase. The teachers organized this strike over social media through the hashtag #dignity_for_teachers. So far the Palestinian government has refused to speak with the teachers' representatives. Leading up to the strike, the teachers had expected to receive back pay and a 2.5% wage increase from an agreement that was reached in 2013.
